Isolation is something every resident of Iceland has to face annually to some extent - if being on a tiny isolated island was not a test of mental fortitude already. Sometimes an isolated lifestyle is obvious, like the residents of this home near Vík, but even in the city where it may seem like there is social closeness, the turbulent and dark winters demand that Icelanders take refuge indoors for much of the day, since storms can erupt out of nowhere at any time, and daylight appears for just 4 hours in the heart of winter. There’s something alluring about it to me, though. I once heard a quote about loneliness that goes like this: “The peacefulness of loneliness is addicting.” I know what that feels like.
