Film photography options
35mm film
35mm is your standard film with a 2:3 aspect ratio and rolls including either 24 or 36 shots per roll. I use 24 shot rolls for anything up to an 8 hour day and a 36 exposure roll for anything over 8, unless otherwise requested. The advantage of this film/camera is that you will get more images and it performs well in low-light and indoor situations so it is more versatile.
medium format 120mm film
This film is larger than 35mm and therefore creates higher quality images. It is available in either a 6:7 aspect ratio that provides 10 images per roll or a 1:1 square format that give you 12 images per roll. The 6:7 camera (on the left above) produces the highest quality images is a good option if you want really sharp, high quality portraits on film. The square format camera (above on the right) does best in brighter lighting conditions, but takes incredible photos for having been made in the 1950’s!
Examples
See the difference in the film options with these pictures taken of a family on the same day with the 3 different cameras.
Pentax K1000 with 35mm film
-
Provides the most images, with either 24 or 36 per roll. The K1000 also does the best of all the cameras in lower light situations, so if it is overcast or your ceremony is in a darker space, this is the best option.
-
Smaller image size, so the quality is not quite as high as the other cameras.
Mamiya 7ii with 120mm film
-
The sharpest and highest quality option. Excellent for portraits and wide shots of the ceremony or venue.
-
The least amount of images per roll, with only 10.
Yashica-C with 120mm film
-
High quality of medium format film with two more images per roll than the Mamiya. Interesting square format.
-
The least versatile camera that doesn’t do very well in situations where the light is not bright. Only good for wedding days that happen mostly outdoors or in venues with large windows.
